JOHANNESBURG, Tuesday 10 March 2026 — The Democratic Alliance said its local government election campaign was moving ahead after the Electoral Commission confirmed the first voter registration weekend for the 2026 municipal polls.
The party said the registration weekend, scheduled for 20 and 21 June 2026, gave political parties and voters a clearer timeline ahead of the elections.
The DA said it would campaign across municipalities and assist voters during the registration period. The party also said it had already announced mayoral candidates in several municipalities and expected further announcements in the coming weeks.
The local government elections will determine the composition of municipal councils across the country. Voters will elect ward councillors and proportional representation councillors, with the outcomes shaping control of metros, local municipalities and district councils.
The IEC has urged eligible voters to verify their registration details and ensure they are registered in the voting district where they ordinarily reside.
The DA said it would focus its campaign on municipal governance, service delivery and local accountability.
Further details on the final election timetable are expected as the IEC and government complete preparations for the polls.
