SOSHANGUVE, Sunday 16 August 2026 — The South African Communist Party launched its local government election manifesto as it prepared to contest elections directly and independently under its own name for the first time since South Africa’s 1994 democratic transition.
The launch took place at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Soshanguve campus and coincided with the SACP’s 105th anniversary.
The party’s manifesto identified reliable public services, employment, land and housing, community safety, changes to municipal procurement and councillor accountability among its priorities.
The SACP said its independent electoral participation did not amount to a withdrawal from its broader political alliance with the ANC and COSATU, and maintained that it remained committed to the National Democratic Revolution and the Alliance.
