CAPE TOWN, Monday 1 June 2026 — Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee elected Makashule Gana as its chairperson as the multi-party body formally began work on the inquiry involving President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Gana received the support of 19 committee members, while Lehlohonolo Mahlatsi received 12 votes. Parliament said the committee would next determine its programme and the procedure governing the inquiry.
The committee was established after the Constitutional Court ordered the independent panel’s Phala Phala report to be referred for further investigation.
Ramaphosa had meanwhile begun legal proceedings to review the panel report, setting up parallel parliamentary and judicial processes around the matter.
