JOHANNESBURG, Tuesday 25 August 2026 — The state has alleged that self-described political fixer Brown Mogotsi planned to escape from the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court by disguising himself as a correctional services official, introducing a significant new issue into his fourth attempt to secure bail.
The allegation was placed before the court on Tuesday as prosecutors opposed Mogotsi’s application for bail on new facts. He remains in custody and the application has been postponed to 1 September for further information from Correctional Services.
According to an affidavit by investigating officer Alfred Odendaal, authorities received information on the morning of 20 August that Mogotsi allegedly intended to use a Correctional Services uniform to leave the court cells.
The information was attributed to a colonel at the Johannesburg Correctional Services Centre. Authorities subsequently increased security around Mogotsi, including placing him in leg irons during his court appearance.
The alleged escape did not take place.
The claim has not been tested by the court and Mogotsi has not been convicted in relation to the alleged escape plan.
Prosecutors are relying on the allegation in opposing his release, arguing that it adds to their contention that Mogotsi presents a flight risk.
The defence was seeking bail on what it described as new facts, including two residential addresses intended to address concerns raised during earlier applications.
The state questioned those addresses, arguing that they had not previously been disclosed.
Mogotsi has unsuccessfully sought bail on three previous occasions, including an appeal to the Johannesburg High Court.
His current criminal case stems principally from allegations that he staged an assassination attempt against himself in Vosloorus in November 2025.
Prosecutors allege that Mogotsi fired shots at his own vehicle and subsequently reported that he had been attacked. He faces charges including perjury, defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Those allegations remain before the courts and have not resulted in a conviction.
Mogotsi has attracted broader political attention because of evidence concerning his alleged relationships with politicians and senior police officials.
He has previously appeared before the Madlanga Commission, which is investigating allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
He has also featured in proceedings before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The alleged escape plan is separate from the matters being investigated by those inquiries, but could affect the court’s assessment of whether Mogotsi should be released while his criminal case continues.
The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court is expected to resume the bail proceedings on 1 September after receiving further information from Correctional Services concerning the alleged plot.
