CENTURION, Monday 22 June 2026 — The Electoral Commission recorded more than 2.9 million voter-registration transactions during the weekend as authorities reviewed election security following a series of killings involving political figures.
The IEC said participation exceeded the level recorded during the equivalent 2021 registration process and reflected continued public participation ahead of the 4 November local government elections.
The weekend was also marked by separate killings involving two MK Party members in Bekkersdal, DA by-election candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe in Cape Town and ANC councillor Sicelo Mleve in Gqeberha. Police investigations into the incidents were under way, and motives had not been established in all cases.
IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said the commission would work through NATJOINTS and law-enforcement agencies to strengthen operational security ahead of the election.
