JOHANNESBURG, Tuesday 30 June 2026 — Demonstrations calling for stronger action against irregular migration were held in several parts of South Africa, with government saying most gatherings remained peaceful despite isolated incidents of looting and attempted looting.
Police and other security agencies had increased deployments ahead of the demonstrations amid concerns about violence, intimidation and attacks on foreign nationals. Government reiterated that immigration enforcement remained the responsibility of the state.
President Cyril Ramaphosa had earlier in June announced a comprehensive government approach to migration covering law enforcement, border management, legislative reforms, anti-corruption measures and regional cooperation.
Government said people involved in criminal acts during the demonstrations would be investigated and prosecuted.
