PRETORIA, Friday 28 August 2026 — The City of Tshwane conferred the honorary title of Alderman on 28 councillors during a council sitting on Thursday, recognising councillors who qualified for the designation through their service in local government.
Deputy Executive Mayor and MMC for Finance Eugene Modise said he was among the councillors who received the title.
“Council today conferred the title of Alderman on 28 councillors, myself among them,” Modise said in a post following the sitting.
Executive Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya also confirmed that she had been conferred with the title during the council meeting.
Moya said aldermanship was an honorary title awarded to councillors in recognition of leadership, service and experience.
The City of Tshwane maintains a formal policy governing the conferment of aldermanship on councillors. The policy appears on the municipality’s official policy register and dates to November 2014.
Under Tshwane’s system, eligibility for aldermanship has historically been determined through a points-based assessment which takes into account factors including years of service as a councillor and service in senior council positions.
The title is separate from a councillor’s elected position and is retained as an honorary designation.
Tshwane’s official council calendar confirms that council met on 27 August and lists a report from the Speaker among the documents associated with the sitting.
A complete official list of the 28 recipients was not immediately available in the publicly searchable council documents on Friday.
