PRETORIA, Wednesday 7 October 2026 — The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team has arrested a second suspect in connection with the killing of EFF Tshwane official Monica Dube, marking a further breakthrough in the investigation four months after she was shot dead at her home north of Pretoria.
The 39-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening following what police described as an intelligence-driven investigation.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said investigators had positively linked the suspect to Dube’s murder.
He is expected to appear in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 7 October, on a charge of murder.
The arrest brings the number of people detained in connection with the killing to two.
Dube held senior EFF role in Tshwane
Dube, 44, was the Economic Freedom Fighters’s Tshwane Region Two secretary and an election coordinator.
She was shot dead at her home in Wallmannsthal in June in the presence of family members.
The killing drew political attention because of Dube’s position within the EFF and followed an earlier attack in March in which she survived after being shot multiple times.
The EFF’s Gauteng leadership described her June killing as an assassination.
Police have tasked the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team with investigating the case.
The description of the killing as politically motivated has featured prominently in political responses to Dube’s death, but investigators have not publicly established a motive for the murder.
First suspect remains in custody
Sipho Lucky Mahlangu was arrested in July and has subsequently made several appearances in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the state’s case alleges that Mahlangu and another man entered Dube’s home through a window during the early hours of 13 June.
Prosecutors allege the men entered her bedroom, shot her in the head while her children were present and stole her cellphone before fleeing.
Mahlangu faces charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
He later abandoned his bail application and remains in custody.
Those allegations have not been tested at trial and Mahlangu has not been convicted.
Second arrest follows continuing investigation
Police have not yet publicly identified the second suspect.
Mathe said the Political Killings Task Team arrested him after investigators positively linked him to the case.
The circumstances of that alleged link have not yet been disclosed.
He is expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday, where further details of the state’s case may emerge.
The arrest comes less than a month before South Africans vote in the 4 November local government elections, with Dube having held an organisational and election-related position within the EFF’s Tshwane structures before her death.
The police investigation remains active.
No finding has been made that Dube was killed because of her political position, and police have not publicly identified who may have ordered or planned the attack.
The second suspect is expected to face a murder charge when he appears in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
